Family Tree Genealogy, or family history study, is the practice of investigation into family lineage. However the word is very regularly incorrectly spelled as geneology almost certainly because words with similar endings are nearly always spelled …ology. This is a means to relate to your ancestors which is becoming increasingly popular among people of all ages around the globe. Genealogy and family tree research is a great pastime and tremendously rewarding! Imagine it as a jigsaw puzzle where not all the pieces are available yet.

Genealogy Research

Researching your lineage can be incredibly satisfying, but can suck up an enormous amount of time and is often frustrating when progress is slow. However, it is now becoming very popular and being taken up by many people who wouldn’t have been able to do the research in the pre-internet days.. Searching for your history and for ancestors can be a lot of pleasure and is very exciting when a branch can be traced back many generations.  It is a great way to learn about your roots and how you got to here..

Genealogy never answered the question I was after as a teenager Who am I and where did I come from? Similar to everybody else, I am working it out by myself. Genealogy publications and research manuals are an vital supplement to any genealogist’s personal library. When somebody is beginning to acquire genealogy books, it is astonishing how much material on genealogy associated topics there is.

Genealogy Databases

The availability of genealogical records has improved enormously.  There are nowadays many online databases with genealogical information and a large number are free to use.  Public records hold all the information about a person, right from their birth to their death. You can search the census records that are open to the public. A little appreciated fact is how far back the Mormon Church goes and the quality of their records which are free to access online. A good place to start for finding genealogy databases is the Genealogy Search Engine at genealogysearchengines.com. Another good one is Ancestor Hunt at ancestorhunt.com

Advance Preparation

Before going online to search it is best to gather together everything you can from your family records.  Make a record of all the names and dates of birth and dates of death you can find out.  Places of birth are often helpful in ensuring you have the right person rather than a namesake. If there are any less common names in the family you can make fast progress by concentrating on this line.  The people who intermarried in this line will fall into place more easily than researching them on their own.

If you run into a road block move onto another part of the tree.  You will often find that you get clues which help get you past the block.  Patience is always needed and do not give up when things get slow.  I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.
